Restaurant Owner Planning Benefit for Romero

Well known Central Kentucky restaurant owner Tommy Walters is planning a fund raising event April 21 for former jockey Randy Romero.

Romero, 44, began kidney dialysis in late January and is on a waiting list for a transplant. He is only partially insured on an insurance policy through his wife, Cricket. Total costs are expected to exceed $200,000.

Romero and Walters, owner of Furlongs cajun restaurants in Lexington and Louisville, Ky., have been friends for many years. "He's a great guy and was a great rider," Walters said. "I just wanted to do something to help him."

At 7 p.m. April 21 at his Lexington restaurant, Walters will host a fund raiser for his friend. Tickets are $100 and will include drinks and dinner. Walters said he wants to sell 100 tickets. Furlongs will receive none of the monies collected during the evening.

"I'm trying to raise $10,000," Walters said. "If I sell all the tickets, then Randy is guaranteed $10,000, plus whatever else we might raise that night."

Walters is inviting members of the riding community in town for the Keeneland meet to serve as celebrity waiters. He also is soliciting items to hold a live auction that night.

For reservations, or to donate auction items, Walters may be contacted at 859 266-9000 and 859 312-5611.
