Eight Battle in California Derby

Lusty Latin earned a trip to the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) with his third-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) last week. Saturday his stablemate, Captain Squire, will attempt to join him on the Derby trail when he competes in the $150,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields.

"The owners (Robert Bone and Jeffrey Diener of Sacramento) plant to go to the Derby if he wins," said trainer Jeff Mullins. The 1 1/8-mile California Derby is the West Coast's final prep for the first Saturday in May. A field of eight will assemble, including Golden State Mile victor Cappuchino.

Captain Squire and Cappuchino both hope to rebound off poor performances in the El Camino Real, in which they finished seventh and eighth.
