War Emblem's Half-Sister Wins Sportsman's Stakes Race in Familiar Style

Russell L. Reineman Stable's Pretty Gale beat Lunar Star by 7 1/4 lengths in the $100,000 Lady Hallie Handicap at Sportsman's Park on Sunday. Pretty Gale, a half-sister of Illinois Derby (gr. II) winner War Emblem, was ridden by Larry Sterling Jr.

"She wasn't going to let her baby brother show her up," said winning trainer Frank Springer.

Pretty Gale covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.99 on a fast track and paid $6, $4.20, and $3. Lunar Star returned $10.20 and $7. Harlan Ash paid $5.60 to show. The winning exacta combination paid $61.80.

"This race was just as easy as War Emblem's in the Illinois Derby last week," Sterling said. "She was nice and relaxed the whole way. I just let her do it on her own and she just galloped along. It takes too much out of 'em when you gun 'em out of there (at the start) so I just let her take the lead. I can't say I was concerned at any point, she was relaxed and it was real easy."

A 4-year-old daughter of Mountain Cat--Sweetest Lady, by Lord At War, Pretty Gale earned $60,000 for the win her fifth in 15 starts and first in a stakes race. Charles Nuckols Jr. and Sons bred her in Kentucky.

Adam's Time finished fourth, followed by Twilight Aurora, Technical Key, Nancybdancing, and Aunty Rose. (Chart, Equibase)
