Derby Hopeful Request for Parole Works

Sam and Jeri Knighton's Request for Parole worked five furlongs at Churchill Downs Wednesday for trainer Stephen Margolis. The son of Judge T C, who finished second to likely Kentucky Derby favorite Harlan's Holiday on two occasions last year, completed his breeze in 1:02 2/5 on a fast track.

"It looked like the track was a little on the deep side, but he handled it good and the boy felt like he galloped out good and strong -- so we're in good shape," said Margolis. "We'll work him back one more time, maybe going three-quarters in eight or nine days, and then we'll lead him over there (for the Derby)."

Under Loren Diego, Request for Parole went in fractions of :25 1/5 and :49 3/5 before galloping out six furlongs in 1:16 2/5.

In his most recent race, Request for Parole finished third -- a neck behind the winner -- in the Spiral Stakes (gr. II) at Turfway Park after uncharacteristically disputing the early fractions. After that race Margolis decided to skip the Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) and train the colt up to the Derby.

"He's eating good and back in his tub," said Margolis. "The way the race set up wasn't the way he's used to running. He kind of had to run from the get-go and I think it took a little more out of him than his other races."

Request for Parole won the Battaglia Memorial and WEBN Frog Stakes prior to the Spiral. Last year, he finished second to Repent in the Kentucky Jockey Club (gr. II) in addition to his two placings to Harlan's Holiday.
