Here's some thoughts about this year's Kentucky Oaks from three trainers who have won it:
D. Wayne Lukas, who saddled With Pride (1982), Lucky Lucky Lucky (1984), Open Mind (1989), and Seaside Attraction (1990): "From the outside it looks like a high quality field, and it's going to be a competitive race. It's just like the Derby though, a lot of them are going to be tested severely going the distance, so I would look to those who probably can get 1 1/8 miles: You and Habibti, and Kenny McPeek's horse (Take Charge Lady). Those are the ones that probably jump off the page to me."
Jerry Hollendorfer, who saddled Lite Light (1991) and Pike Place Dancer (1996): "I hate to say it, but I'm not really up on the Oaks. I wanted to look at that race and see how it was going to come up, but I didn't have any fillies for it this year. So, I would assume McPeek's filly is going to be the favorite in there, and I assume that she would win it."
Shug McGaughey, saddled Dispute (1993): "I think Take Charge Lady is an outstanding horse. She's wins easy. She runs fast. I watched her train at Gulfstream, and she trained great. Bella Bellucci, you know she'll run good."
