Trio of Horses Work Toward Possible Met Mile Starts

Three horses under consideration for the $750,000 Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) were on track at Belmont Park Wednesday morning in preparation for the prestigious one-turn mile race.

Affirmed Success, Aldebaran, and Burning Roma each put in works, with Affirmed Success running his seven furlongs on the training track.

Carter Handicap (gr. I) winner Affirmed Success may bypass the May 27 Met Mile in favor of the Tom Fool (gr. II) on July 4 or he may run in both. The 8-year-old completed his work in 1:29.

"It was a nice, easy, distance breeze," trainer Richard Schosberg said. "We've kind of been dodging the rain drops with him. I'm happy with the way he did it. It was an endurance type work. We'll probably sharpen him up for speed next Tuesday."

Richard Migliore is slated to ride the versatile gelding in whichever race he is entered.

"Migliore and the horse have jelled at the right time," Schosberg said. "He has confidence in the horse. The horse has confidence in him."

Bobby Frankel-trained Aldebaran went six furlongs in 1:16 4/5 on the main track. Burning Roma completed his six furlongs in 1:13 4/5.

Horses listed as likely for the Met Mile are: Affirmed Success, Aldebaran, Burning Roma, Congaree, Crafty C.T., D'Wildcat, E Dubai, Grey Memo, Left Bank, Redattore, Voodoo, and Wake At Noon. Cornelius and Mr. John are considered possible.
