26 Still Eligible for Epsom Derby

Only 26 horses remain eligible for the June 8 Vodafone Derby (Eng-I) at Epsom Downs. Among trainers, Aidan O'Brien has the most chances at winning, simply because eight of the horses in his barn are still eligible. O'Brien, who won last year's race with Galileo, has Ballingarry, Black Sam Bellamy, Castle Gondolfo, Diaghilev, Hawk Wing, High Chaparral, Louisville, and Rock of Gibraltar. Four of those are by leading sire Sadler's Wells, including Black Sam Bellamy, a full sibling to Galileo (out of Urban Sea).

Godolphin still has five runners eligible including stakes winners Moon Ballad and Naheef. There is at least one American-owned interest, Coshocton.

On June 1 more horses can enter the race, but only for £90,000. The newest addition to the Godolphin stable, Bandari, could enter at that point.

Vodafone has renewed its contract to sponsor tye Derby through 2005, with a two-year option beyond that.

The Vodafone Derby will be run over one mile, four furlongs, and about 10 yards, and is worth £1,200,000.
