Belmont Gears Up for Four-Stakes Weekend

Three-year-old Sunday Break is just one of the many top horses expected to compete in four stakes scheduled for the three-day Memorial weekend at Belmont Park in New York.

The New York Racing Association released the list of probable starters for the May 25 Peter Pan Stakes for 3-year-olds; the May 26 Kingston Handicap for New York-breds on the grass; and the May 27 Metropolitan Mile for 3-year-olds and up, and the $100,000 Jaipur Handicap for 3-year-olds and up on the turf.

Sunday Break, third in the April 13 Wood Memorial, wil use the Peter Pan as a prep for the June 8 Belmont Stakes. Also expected for the $200,000, grade II event at 1 1/8 miles are probable Belmont starter Puzzlement; Withers winner Fast Decision; Heir D'Twine; and Ibn al Haitham. NYRA said Deputy Dash and Essayons are "questionable" for the Peter Pan.

The Kingston, for 3-year-olds and at 1 1/8 miles on the grass, is expected to lure Affair in the Air, Bicentennial, Brave One, Chasin' Wimmin, Eye of the Comet, Haggs Castle, I'm All Yours, Light Up The Sky, No White Flags, Quiet Ruler, Reluctant Groom, Robbie's Rockin, and Whitmore's Conn.

Eight-year-old Affirmed Success is expected for the grade I Met Mile, which carries a purse of $750,000. Others lining up for the event are Aldebaran, Burning Roma, Crafty C.T., D'Wildcat, E Dubai, Grey Memo, Left Bank, Redattore, Voodoo, and Wake at Noon. Californian Swept Overboard is considered questionable for the race.

Named for the grade III Jaipur at seven furlongs are Capsized, French Envoy, Grangeville, Ing Ing, River Rush, Shadow Caster, Shibboleth, Treasured Gift, and Watchman's Warning.
