Barrera Memorial Kicks Off Three-Stakes Card at Hollywood Park Monday

Hollywood Park's first race Monday is the $150,000 Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes (gr. II), the first of three graded stakes on the holiday card. Race six is the Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap and race eight is the Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile Stakes, both of which are $500,000 grade I turf races.

Fonz's and Captain Squire are the 123-pound co-highweights for the Barrera Memorial, and they'll begin their seven-furlong journey from the two outside posts -- five and six, respectively. Lightweights Royal Moro and Kamsack (both at 113 pounds) drew posts one and two, with Raven Power and Ecstatic drawing the middle posts and weight assignments of 115 ponds.

Last time out, Fonz's finished third in the nine-furlong Illinois Derby (gr. II). The chestnut son of Out of Place last win came in the seven-furlong Hollywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III) and has yet to win from three attempts at two-turn races.

The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Ecstatic has yet to win a stakes race but finished second in his seasonal debut in the Harry Henson Stakes on the Hollywood turf course. The son of Rahy also finished third last year in the Norfolk Stakes (gr. II) behind Godolphin stablemates Essence of Dubai and Ibn Al Haitham.

Kamsack finished second to Officer in the Del Mar Futurity (gr. II) while making his second career start before finishing a dull seventh in the Lane's End Breeders Futurity (gr. II) at Keeneland. He has since undergone surgery on his knees.

"He had chips taken out of both knees," said trainer Christopher Paasch Friday. "If he stays sound, he will be a major 3-year-old. He's a big fleshy colt, and I think he will go on."

The six 3-year-olds entered in the Lazaro Barrera Memorial are:

1--Royal Moro, Patrick Valenzuela, 113
2--Kamsack, Kent Desormeaux, 113
3--Raven Power, Alex Solis, 115
4--Ecstatic, Mike Smith, 115
5--Fonz's, Victor Espinoza, 123
6--Captain Squire, Chance Rollins, 123
