Turf Stakes Winner Northcote Road Retired

Three-time stakes winner Northcote Road has been retired from racing after suffering a ligament injury. The injury was discovered after the 7-year-old gelding came out of a recent gallop with a filling in his pastern.

Charles Duncker's Northcote Road won 12 of 54 career starts for trainer William "Blackie" Huffman, and retires with earnings of $729,885. Northcote Road won three stakes races -- all at the Fair Grounds – and finished second at the New Orleans track in the 2001 Explosive Bid Handicap (gr. IIT), won by Tijiyr. He won consecutive renewals of the Mardi Gras Handicap and this year's Col. E.R. Bradley Handicap.

The son of Conquistador Cielo--Border, by Spectacular Bid, was purchased for $42,000 at the 1996 Keeneland September yearling sale.
