Graded Stakes Winner Futural Claimed at Hollywood Park

Less than a year ago Futural won the grade I, $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup by 1 1/2 lengths before being disqualified and placed third. Thursday at Hollywood Park the 6-year-old son of Future Storm finished last as the 9-5 favorite while racing for a claiming tag of $80,000.

Dig For It beat Slewston by a nose in Thursday's $58,000 feature race at Hollywood Park. Ridden by Alex Solis and carrying 117 pounds, Dig For It covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.58 and paid $8.40, $4.40, and $2.80. The win was the sixth in 43 lifetime starts for Dig For It and was worth $34,800, raising the career earnings of the 7-year-old son of Digamist to $451,638. Dig For It, who finished third in the 2001 Pacific Classic (gr. I) and set a Hollywood Park track record for 1 3/16 miles last year, was also entered with a claiming tag of $80,000.

Slewston, at 8-1 the longest shot in a field of five, returned $7 and $3 while Truly A Judge paid $2.20 to show. Hadrian's Wall was fourth and Futural fifth and last in the allowance-claiming race for 3-year-olds and up.

Futural appeared to win the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup last July 1, but was disqualified for interference. Futural has lost nine races since winning the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park 13 months ago. He was claimed by trainer John Terry Marshall for owner Kim Noble Hart.
