Babae Holds Off Tates Creek in Just a Game

Babae, in her second start of the year, sat second behind early leader Penny Marie, then took the lead and held off a late challenge to win the Just a Game Breeders' Cup (gr. III) Saturday at Belmont.

Under Jorge Chavez, Babae had run third in the Beaugay Handicap (gr. III) on May 5, her first start since November. Penny Marie cleared the field from the outside post and Chavez sat right behind her until taking the lead in the stretch. Tates Creek, under Kent Desormeaux, and Stylish, with Pat Day up, made a run but she had enough to hold them off.

"When I asked her, she kicked and I saw the outside horse was coming," said Chavez. "I didn't know if I was going to hang on, but I kept working and made it just in time.

Babae is a Chilean-bred 6-year-old mare by Barkerville out of the Fain mare Betrayer. She is owned by Joseph Platt and trained by Frank Alexander.

Babae ran the mile on turf in 1:34.57 after fractions of :23.41, :46.20, and 1:09.96. She paid $8, $3.80, and $2.90. Tates Creek returned $3.80 and $2.30, and Stylish $2.90.

For Babae, it was her 10th win in 34 lifetime starts. (Chart, Equibase)
