Sister of German Derby Winner Takes German Oaks

Gestut Hony-Hof's Salve Regina, a full sister of 2000 German Derby winner Samum, pressed the pace then drew clear in the final furlong to win Sunday's Osterman Preis der Diana -- Deutsches Stuten-Derby (Ger-I) by 2/12 lengths at Mulheim. Under Richard Hills, the daughter of Monsun completed the 1 3/8 miles in 2:16.64 on a turf course listed as good.

Fellow German-breds Midnight Angel (by Acatanango) and Guadalupe (Monsun) finished second and third, respectively, with American-bred Tomori (Royal Academy) fourth of 12.

The Andreas Schutz-trained Salve Regina won at first asking in late March, then won the Diana Trial in mid-May in her only other career start prior to Sunday. Gestut Karlshof bred Salve Regina from the Old Vic mare Sacarina. Aside from the German Derby, Salve Regina's brother Samum also won the Mercedes Benz-Grosser Preis von Baden (Ger-I).
