Grade I Sprinter Snow Ridge Retired

William T. Young's grade I winner Snow Ridge has been retired from racing after injuring a sesamoid while on an exercise trial at Churchill Downs. The injury will not require surgery, and he is expected to arrive shortly at Young's Overbrook Farm near Lexington. He will enter stud next year.

Snow Ridge, who was being readied for the June 29 Aristides Handicap (gr. III) at Churchill Downs, won four of six races this year and ranks No 10 on the NTRA Poll. His 117 Beyer Speed Figure in his 1:07.70 victory in the six-furlong Palos Verdes Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita over Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Squirtle Squirt at Santa Anita is the third-highest of the year for distances up to a mile.

Snow Ridge also won the San Carlos (gr. I) and El Conego (gr. III) Handicaps at this year's at Santa Anita meeting and took the May 18 Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) in what was his final start. His victories last year included a triumph in the Kentucky Cup Sprint Stakes (gr. II). Bred by Mt. Brilliant Farm and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, he retires with 10 wins from 21 starts and earnings of $711,989.

A son of former Overbrook stallion Tabasco Cat, Snow Ridge was bought by Overbrook for $420,000 at the 1999 Keeneland September yearling sale. His dam, Snow Forest, is by Woodman.
