Outofthebox, winner of last year's Super Derby XXII (gr. I), has been retired from racing after injuring his left front ankle. The injury is not considered career ending, said Richard Klein, who owns the colt with his parents, Bertram and Elaine Klein. Outofthebox's retirement came a little more than a week after the family retired grade II winner De Bertie because of a bone chip in her right front ankle."They gave us great thrills, and now it's time to get excited about their stud careers, "Richard Klein said. The family plans to sell 4-year-old Outofthebox, but will retain 5-year-old De Bertie.Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud Farms, Outofthebox earned $607,995 of his career total of $734,008 as a 3-year-old last year and $300,000 of that came from the Super Derby. Outofthebox placed in five career stakes, four of which were graded, including the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. I). He missed the classics after injuring his right hind foot in the Flamingo Stakes (gr. III).
