Olivares, who was introduced to the racetrack at an early age by his father, who was a trainer, came to the United States from Cuba at age 15 and worked various stable jobs. Some of the best horses he has trained include Flying Pidgeon, Groomstick, Majestic Sweep, Powder Break, Marcie's Ensign and Arthur L.Headed for years by Joe O'Farrell, Ocala Stud has bred and sold one Horse of the Year, four divisional champions, and over 90 stakes winners.Alex Solis rode at Calder when he came to the U.S. from his native Panama in 1982 and has became one of the country's top riders while based in California. Solis will not attend the July 13 induction ceremony and will be represented by his son, Alex, Jr., father-in-law trainer Bert Sonnier, and two of his former jockey agents, Jesse Parsons and Victor Sanchez.
Four new members will be inducted into the Calder Hall of Fame on July 13. They are: Hollywood Wildcat (horse), Luis Olivares (trainer), Ocala Stud Farm (owner/breeder), and Alex Solis (jockey).A minimum of four individuals are inducted into the Calder Hall of Fame each year: a horse, a trainer, an owner or breeder, and a jockey. The inductees are selected by a panel consisting of members of Calder's administrative, racing, marketing and publicity departments along with members of the local racing media.Bred and owned by Marjorie and Irving Cowan, Hollywood Wildcat was the Eclipse Award winning 3-Year-Old filly champion of 1993.
