Grade I stakes winner Cetewayo, who races in the colors of John A. Chandler, will carry highweight of 118 pounds when he heads a field of nine marathoners in Saturday's $200,000-added, 1 1/2- mile Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. III) at Arlington Park.
The Stars and Stripes will be televised live nationally as part of the "NTRA Summer Racing Tour on CBS" presented by Long John Silver's from 4-5 p.m. (Central time; 5-6 p.m. Eastern). Also on the telecast will be $500,000 grade I United Nations Handicap from Monmouth Park and the grade II $500,000 Suburban Handicap from Belmont Park. The three races can be bet as the NTRA Summer Pick Three, a $2 minimum wager (with $1 partial wheels available) which will be hubbed through the Monmouth Park tote system.
An 8-year-old son of His Majesty, Cetewayo won the grade I Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap in February and finished second in the grade II Pan American Handicap at that same South Florida oval the following month. Last time out, the Michael Dickinson-trained horse was best by three-quarters of a length when dispatched as the 1-2 favorite in the $100,000 Greenwood Cup Handicap at Philadelphia Park. Rene Douglas, Arlington's leading jockey, gets the mount aboard Cetewayo, who will spot his eight rivals from one to eight pounds.
Diamond C. Stable's Pisces comes to Arlington after being adjudged co-winner of the grade III Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs following the disqualification of Two Point Two Mill from the victory in the 1 3/8 mile race. A son of Prized, Pisces captured the grade II Appleton Handicap at Gulfstream in January and was second in the grade II Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland in April. Roger Velez gets the call from trainer Ken McPeek to pilot Pisces, who gets in with 117 pounds.
Centaur Farm's Classic Par dead-heated with Pisces in the Louisville Handicap and is slated to carry 115 pounds in the Stars and Stripes. The 4-year-old Sky Classic colt, who is also nominated to the grade I Arlington Million, is trained by Merrill Scherer and will be ridden by Frank Lovato Jr.
The remainder of the field for the Stars and Stripes (with weight assignment and jockey) is: Dolphus Morrison's Red Mountain (113 pounds, Randall Meier); Alan Drey's Bahroba (112, Chris Emigh); Starlex Farm's Private Son (111, C. H. Marquez Jr.); and Larry F. Telle's Red Antics (110, Eusebio Razo Jr.).
