Boston Common in Front-Running Jersey Shore Upset

Richard Englander's Boston Common led from gate to wire for an upset victory in Thursday's $100,000 Jersey Shore Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park.

Ridden by Eddie Martin Jr. for trainer Michael V. Pino, the 3-year-old son of Boston Harbor reached the wire nearly three lengths in front of Listen Here. The winner completed the six furlongs in a brisk 1:09 1/5 over a fast track. It's a Monster, the 13-10 favorite in the field of six 3-year-olds, was third.

Boston Common paid $22.00, $6 and $3.40, and topped an exacta worth $132.40. Listen Here paid $5.40 and $3.40, while It's a Monster returned $2.40 to show.

"He broke better than good," said Martin. "It played in my hands pretty much the whole way. I was able to give this horse a huge breather from the half-mile pole all the way to the eighth pole. I cracked him a couple of times left-handed in the lane and he got down to business."

The victory was the fourth in 13 career starts for Boston Common, who was red in Kentucky by Overbrook Farm.
