Appleby Gardens, $2-Million Filly, Wins Career Debut

Appleby Gardens, the $2-million top-priced filly at the 2001 Saratoga select yearling sale, won the restricted Shady Well Stakes in her career debut at Woodbine on Sunday. The 6-5 favorite, she edged Mountain Dawn by a head, covering the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.93 under jockey Rob Landry.

Pharmaceutical executive Eugene Melnyk purchased Appleby Gardens from Anderson Farms, agent, at Saratoga. He races the 2-year-old Canadian-bred daughter of A.P. Indy in partnership with his wife, Laura.
Rod Ferguson, A.M. Cuddy, and Anderson Farms bred Appleby Gardens. Her dam, Larkwhistle (by Silver Deputy), was a Canadian champion who won the Shady Well in 1996.

Todd Pletcher trains Appleby Gardens, who is based at Belmont Park.
