Smith Replaces McCarron on Came Home in Swaps

Edited press release from Hollywood Park
Trainer Paco Gonzalez Thursday expressed confidence that Came Home would live up to his expected favoritism in the $500,000 Swaps Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles Sunday.

"I don't think the extra sixteenth will be a problem the way he ran last time," said Gonzalez Thursday from his Santa Anita base in reference to a two-length victory June 23 in an emotion-packed Affirmed Handicap that sent Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron out a winner in his farewell ride.

"He's been doing very good since the Affirmed," said Gonzalez, who worked the colt Tuesday and will ship him across town Sunday morning.

Came Home, who had been ridden by McCarron in all nine previous starts, will have the services of Mike Smith for the first time in the grade II Swaps. "Mike has worked him a couple of times, and he is an easy horse to ride," said Gonzalez. "He just needs to get a good start."

Co-owner John Toffan has apparently decided upon Smith to succeed McCarron as the stable's first rider. "Mike has got experience and is available to ride most of our horses," said Gonzalez.

The week started on a positive note for the stable Wednesday when Gonzalez sent out Cash Blizzard and Fair Bianca to victories here under Smith.

Gonzalez has won the Swaps twice for co-owners Toffan and Trudy McCaffery: with Bien Bien in 1992 and Free House in1997. He hopes the five-year plan continues.

Came Home, a Kentucky-bred son of Gone West out of the stakes-winning mare Nice Assay, has won seven of nine starts and earned $935,940. A first or second-place finish would make him racing's newest millionaire.

Came Home will carry highweight of 122 pounds from post six and concede six rivals from four to ten pounds. The Swaps will kick off a stakes tripleheader as the third race.
