Account Wagering Goes Into Effect in Massachusetts

Recent approval from the Massachusetts State Racing Commission of the TVG network and Magna Entertainment's XpressBet system means bettors there soon will be able to sign up for account wagering with either provider.

An agreement already is in place between the Boston-area track and Magna, permitting fans to sign up with XpressBet and wager on tracks available through that system; final details are being worked out with TVG, with an agreement expected within the next two weeks.

According to state regulations, account holders will be able to make cash or check deposits and cash withdrawals at an on-site center at Suffolk Downs. Credit card payments are not allowed for Massachusetts residents. A minimum opening deposit of $25 is required.

"We waited a long time for this," said Suffolk Downs chief operating officer Bob O'Malley. "Hopefully, it will prove to be beneficial to our business. Account wagering gives us the best chance of getting the races on television." Live racing returns to Suffolk Downs on September 28.
