War Emblem Assigned 124 for Haskell Invitational

Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. II) winner War Emblem will have to spot his foes from two to 10 pounds if he makes his anticipated trip to New Jersey from California for the Aug. 4 Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I), a $1-million race over nine furlongs.

Monmouth Park racing secretary and handicapper Sean Greely weighted 15 horses, giving War Emblem top weight of 124 pounds. Last year, Point Given carried 124 pounds to a narrow victory for the same owner-trainer combination of Saudi Prince Ahmed Salman's The Thoroughbred Corp. and Bob Baffert.

Closest to the front-running War Emblem in the weights is Came Home, winner of the Swaps Stakes (gr. II) at Hollywood Park last out. Earlier this year the son of Gone West won the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), then was sixth behind War Emblem in the Kentucky Derby. His connections may be leaning toward running in the Haskell.

Next in the weights is Medaglia d'Oro at 121 pounds, one more than Booklet. The latter two horses are not expected to start.
