Heavy favorite Bear Fan cruised to victory in the $100,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Del Mar Sunday, winning by a widening seven lengths.
Sent off at 2-5 in the seven-furlong test for eight California breds, the daughter of Pine Bluff sat patiently behind the leaders, swung four wide on the turn for home and drew off. The final time was 1:22.30.
Bred, owned and trained by Wesley Ward, Bear Fan was ridden by Mike Smith. She paid $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10. Runner-up Nicole's Pursuit returned $7.60 and $2.10. The Parties Over paid $2.10 to show. The $2 exacta paid $27.60.
Lightly raced, she remains undefeated in three career starts. The Fleet Treat is her first stakes appearance.
"She's so big that I wanted to give her some time," said Ward,
"let her come into herself. This is a nice filly. As a foal she was
beautiful. You know, you can find a lot of beautiful foals, but you don't know what's inside. She showed early on that she had a great turn of foot and she also has a beautiful mind. Her first race, she was a little green. The last couple of races, especially this one, were for experience. Now, after this race, I think she's ready to take on bigger and better things."
