Irish National Stud Buys Stake in Medecis

The Irish National Stud announced that it has purchased an interest in Medecis, a 3-year-old son of Machiavellian. A winner of four of six starts with a pair of seconds, Medecis' last start was a victory in the about one-mile Prix de la Jonchere (Fr-III) at Chantilly on June 17. He is due to make his next start in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Aug. 18.

Medecis was owned by his breeder, Wertheimer & Frere and is trained by Criquette Head-Maarek. Bred in England, Medecis is out of the Darshaan stakes-winning and group-placed mare Renashaan.

A winner of both his starts at two including the Prix Herod, Medecis began this year with a victory in the Prix Omnium II at St. Cloud on March 26. He then ran second in both the Prix de Fontainebleau (Fr-III) and Gainsborough Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French Two Thousand Guineas; Fr-I) before his Jonchere score.

"As a high-class son of sire of sires Machiavellian, from a great family and a most impressive individual, Medecis should be a wonderful addition to our roster of sires," said Lady O'Reilly, chairman of the Irish National Stud.

Machiavellian is the sire of 37 stakes winners including Street Cry, winner of the 2002 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) and Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill Downs.
