Juddmonte Farm's Dance Dreamer, the 4-5 favorite in a five-horse field, hit the front in mid-stretch and cruised to a 1 1/4-length victory in the $75,000 Escondido Handicap at Del Mar Wednesday.
The winner, ridden by Kent Desormeaux and trained by Robert Frankel, was timed in 2:12.86 for the 1 13/8 miles on the turf, missing the track record set by Navarone in 1992 by .46 of a second.
Dance Dreamer was reserved in last place but never more than about six lengths off the easy pace set by Homeland, part of a Gary Tanaka-owned entry along with Tapatio. After saving ground into the stretch, Desormeaux moved Dance Dreamer to the outside and he swept past Little Ghazi and Homeland to win while well in hand.
It was Dance Dreamer's third win in four tries in the United States, and his first stakes race. Dance Dreamer is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred colt by Nureyev.
Dance Dreamer paid $3.60 and $2.60. Homeland returned $3.40. Little Ghazi was third. With only four betting interests, there was no show wagering. The $2 exacta paid $15.20.
