No Live Racing at Belmont Park on Sept. 11

Edited release from NYRA
The New York Racing Association has submitted a request to the New York State Racing and Wagering Board to be dark on Wednesday September 11 and run instead on Monday Sept. 9.

"With the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, we can best pay our respects to those who lost their lives in that tragic event by not racing on that day," said NYRA chairman and CEO Barry K. Schwartz. "A deep sadness and loss was felt by all New Yorkers that day and we think this is the appropriate measure to take."

If the request is approved, Belmont Park will open for its fall season on Friday Sept. 6 and complete its opening week with the card on Monday Sept. 9. After being dark on Tuesday and Wednesday, racing would resume on Thursday September 12 and continue on its regular schedule.

Belmont Park is offering free general parking and grandstand admission.for the Sept. 9 card.
