Lone Star Sky Draws Away in Cradle at River Downs

Heavily favored Lone Star Sky overcame a bumping incident on the first turn that forced him to steady and pulled away for a 2 3/4-length win over Christmas Away in the $200,000 Cradle for 2-year-olds at River Downs Monday.

The Walter L. New-owned son of Conquistador Cielo is trained by Thomas Amoss and was ridden in the 1 1/16-mile event by Mark Guidry.

Lone Star Sky won for the third time in four career starts. He was coming off a second-place finish to Zavata in the Saratoga Special Aug. 14. The $120,000 winner's purse increased his career earnings to more than $250,000.

He was bumped in the first turn by Risky Cat, but recovered and was able to press the early pace by Payforaday on the outside. He cleared the field in the stretch and was drawing off while drifiting late.

Sent off at 3-10 in the nine-horse field, Lone Star Sky was timed in 1:46.80 and paid $2.60, $2.40 and $2.10. Christmas Away returned $3.60 and $2.80. Payforaday's show price was $3. The $2 exacta was $13.60
