Once Again, Baffert Holding Futurity Aces

(from track report)
The $300,000 Del Mar Futurity (gr. II) on closing day Wednesday continues to shape up as a yet another Bob Baffert revue for 2-year-olds going seven furlongs on the main track.

Baffert, seeking his seventh straight Futurity victory, is expected to send out at least four and maybe five starters in The Futurity. Four of his prospects – Icecoldbeeratreds, Chief Planner, Kafwain and Friendly Mike – put in their final pre-Futurity works Friday morning. All went five furlongs.

Icecoldbeeratreds, who won Del Mar's Graduation Stakes, stopped the clocks in a sizzling 58.40 to share the day's bullet work with the very fast mare, Kalookan Queen.

Kafwain, winner of the Best Pal Stakes (gr. III), worked a sparkling 59.40, while Best Pal runner-up Chief Planner was caught in 59.80. Friendly Mike made the distance in 1:01.80.

A fifth prospect, Bull Market, worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.40 Wednesday.

At this point, only Outta Here, who is a twice stakes-placed maiden, is up for the challenge presented by the Baffert brigade.

The son of Dehere, trained by co-owner William Currin, worked Wednesday morning in a dense fog and was not given a time for his half-mile work. However, Currin's exercise rider, the former jockey Pat Seeley, said the clock in his head ticked off 48 1/5 for the work.

A possible contender in the Futurity, Gentlemen's Club, popped 5 furlongs Friday morning in 59.40. Trainer Richard Mandella has been reluctant to commit the son of Gentlemen to the race, but said he was happy with today's work.
