Quality Abounds on Ky. Cup Undercard

Claiborne Farm's Trip has been made the 2-1 morning line favorite for the Turfway Breeders' Cup (gr. III), to be run during the Kentucky Cup card at the northern Kentucky track Sept. 14. Trip will break from post 7 in her bid to repeat in the $200,000 race and will be ridden by Pat Day. Two years ago, Spain used the Turfway Breeders' Cup as the springboard for the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I).

Mystic Lady, who will be ridden by Richard Migliore, and the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Magic Storm figure prominently in the race. Softly, third in the Gardenia Handicap (gr. III) at Ellis Park last month for trainer Carl Nafzger and owner James Tafel, heads the local contingent.

Derby Trial (gr. III) winner Sky Terrace, who broke his maiden at Turfway during last year's Kentucky Cup card, is the 3-1 favorite for the $150,000 Kentucky Cup Sprint (gr. III) for 3-year-olds at six furlongs. A pair of horses from Lukas' barn in Shah Jehan and Day Trader also figure prominently. A large cast of 11 has been drawn for one of the last graded sprints for sophomores this year.

Atlantic Ocean, the most expensive sale 2-year-old filly in history and recent maiden winner , ships east from Del Mar for the Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies. Trained by Bob Baffert and owned by The Thoroughbred Corp., the daughter of Storm Atlantic sold for $1.9 million at the Barretts sale of 2-year-olds in training in March. Under Mike Smith she broke her maiden in her third lifetime start last out at Del Mar on Aug. 28 going a mile.
The morning line favorite for the $100,000 race at 1 1/16 miles is Oasis Racing Stable's Ruby's Reception, a daughter of Rubiano. Ruby's Reception, trained by Larry Jones, won the A.M. Fisher Debutante Stakes going seven furlongs at Ellis Park in her last start.
