Affirmed Success Gets a Rest

Affirmed Success, the 8-year-old gelding who has earned more than $2 million, has been turned out to owner Albert Fried Jr.'s 190-acre farm in Rhinebeck, N.Y. Trainer Richard Schosberg said Affirmed Success exited the July 4 Tom Fool (gr. I), a race he ran second to eventual Whitney Handicap (gr. I) winner Left Bank in, tired and worn out. Left Bank broke Belmont's Park's seven-furlong track record that scorching afternoon.

'It was 100 degrees when we ran in the Met Mile (ran fourth) and the Tom Fool," Schosberg said. "He wasn't acting like himself. We sent him to Cornell University for a full exam and he cleared it fine. He's going to get a little more R & R. If we bring him back and he doesn't have that fire, we'll call it a career. I couldn't be happier with him going out a grade I winner if this is his last year in training."

Earlier this year, Affirmed Success won the 102nd Carter Handicap at Aqueduct, his third grade I score. Overall, Affirmed Success has won nine stake races.
