Stylish, Babae Favored in Violet at Meadowlands

The Violet Handicap (gr. IIIT) at the Meadowlands Friday night has drawn an overflow field of 16 to compete in the 1 1/16-mile turf event for fillies and mares, 3-years-old and upward.

Among those set to challenge their rivals in the $150,000 Violet are co-highweights Stylish and Babae. Each will carry 119 pounds.

Stylish will be reunited with Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey in the Violet for the first time since the duo captured the Citgo Distaff Turf Mile on Derby Day at Churchill Downs this year. That was one of two wins this season for the Bill Mott trainee, who also took the Rockingham Breeders' Cup Handicap.

The Chilean bred Babae is a multiple grade III winner, taking the Just A Game this year and the Athenia last year, both at Belmont Park. She is trained by Frank Alexander and gets the services of jockey Jorge Chavez for Friday night's race.

Other leading contenders are Wander Mom, Eventail, Tippity Witch, Shooting Party and Platinum Tiara.

The overflow left the racing office to name a field of 12 with four horses on the "alternate" list. Preference was given to high weights with ties given to those who have earned the most lifetime money. The alternates can draw in upon scratches from the main body of the field.
