Midlantic Sale Posts Solid Numbers

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling sale has shown strong numbers through the first two days of the three-day auction. On Monday and Tuesday, gross and average are up slightly, while the median is up significantly and the number of horses bought back is down. The sale ends today.

Over the two days, 362 horses have been sold for $6,141,600, an average of $16,966. Another 115 yearlings (24.1%) have been bought back. A year ago, 357 were sold for $5,790,400, an average of $16,220. There were 146 (29%) listed as not sold.

The most telling number is the median, which has risen nearly one-third, from $7,700 to $10,000.

On Tuesday, three yearlings sold for six figures, led by the sale-topper to this point, a Silver Charm filly purchased by agent Buzz Chace for $150,000. Consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield as agent, the Florida-bred filly it out of a half-sister to Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Lil E. Tee, the winning Raggaas mare My Big Sis. The filly was bought back for $50,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky yearling sale.

The other two six-figure prices, $125,000 and $100,000, were for a pair of colts by El Prado. Just two horses after Chace made his winning bid, Skeedattle Associates paid $125,000 for a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Walkslikeaduck (by Blushing John). The yearling colt's dam, the Theatrical mare Nabia, is a full sister to Del Mar Show, who has won five graded stakes and nearly $750,000. The Kentucky-bred colt was sold by Whitewood Stable, Walnut Green, agent.

Early in the Tuesday session, Fox Ridge Farm paid $100,000 for an El Prado colt out of the stakes winning Cozzene mare Lady Aloma. The Kentucky-bred half-brother to stakes winner Karra Kul (by Strawberry Road) was consigned by The Lads, Paramount Sales, agent. The colt was bought back at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale for $170,000.
