Churchill Unveils Logo, Contest for 2003 Derby

Churchill Downs on Wednesday introduced its official logo for the 2003 Kentucky Derby and announced a contest for an all expenses paid trip for four to the 2003 "Run for the Roses."

The three-color, diamond-shaped logo depicts a head-on view of a Thoroughbred and jockey bursting forward against a black-and- white background. To the left of the horse and jockey are the words "Kentucky Derby" and a larger "129" that is located just below the company's familiar Twin Spires logo. The Derby's date of May 3, 2003 and the words "Churchill Downs" are displayed to the right of the horse and a red rose is located at the bottom of the design.

As part of the logo introduction, Churchill also announced a special sale of Derby 129 merchandise via the Internet. Included with a limited-edition collectible pin in the Internet-only merchandise package are a T-shirt, an embroidered cap and a Kentucky Derby 129 Mint Julep glass. Each limited edition Derby logo pin is numbered and adorned by a red rhinestone chip that represents the Derby rose. According to the announcement of the logo, 2003 of the pins have been manufactured and once that supply is exhausted, the collectible pin will be retired. The announcement said the merchandise package has a retail value of $48 but is being offered through the track's Web site for $34.95.

Winner of the "Kentucky Derby 129 Dream Weekend Sweepstakes" will receive tickets for four to the 129th renewals of both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby on May 2-3. The grand prize also includes complimentary airfare, hotel accommodations and ground transportation for both days of racing at Churchill Downs.
