Minor Abscess Delays Perfect Drift Work, Still Classic Bound

A minor foot ailment forced trainer Murray Johnson to postpone the final pre-race workout for Perfect Drift, a Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) contender owned by Stonecrest Farm. Johnson, however, does not expect the problem to keep the gelding out of the Oct. 26 race at Arlington Park.

The 3-year-old son of Dynaformer, who won the Indiana Derby (gr. III) and the Spiral Stakes (gr. II) at Turfway Park and was third in Kentucky Derby (gr. I), was scheduled to work Saturday morning at Churchill Downs' Trackside Louisville training center. A minor abscess discovered in Perfect Driftês left front foot postponed that work until Monday or Tuesday.

"He was uncomfortable and we took a look at the foot right away," Johnson said. "There was no bruise or anything, but there was some heat in there. We took off the shoe and found a little pocket of infection, so we drained it and it looks very good today."

Johnson said Perfect Drift has responded very well to the treatment and he does not anticipate the foot ailment to develop into a significant problem.

"He's doing very well today," he said. "He's sound and he's very happy. He's bouncing around his stall."

Perfect Drift will have a new jockey in the Classic in Kentucky-based Robby Albarado, who replaces the injured Eddie Delahoussaye.

In other Breeders' Cup new, Overbrook Spinster Stakes (gr. I) winner Take Charge Lady is scheduled to complete her major training for the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) with a Saturday morning breeze at Churchill Downs. Trainer Ken McPeek's 3-year-old filly is scheduled to work after the mid-session break for track maintenance.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas' two contenders for the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I)--Robert and Beverly Lewis' Orientate and Overbrook Farm's Day Trader--are expected to work on Sunday or Monday.

Mary and Gary West's Classic hopeful Dollar Bill will breeze on Sunday or Monday for trainer Dallas Stewart. Buddy New's Juvenile (GI) contender Lone Star Sky is expected to breeze on Tuesday for trainer Tom Amoss. Steven Miles' Juvenile Fillies contender Westerly Breeze may also work next week for trainer Carl Nafzger
