Maid in the Mist Stakes Goes to Beautiful America

Chester and Mary Broman's Beautiful America overcame a troubled start, then came wide in the lane to overtake favored Combanchera and win the $100,000 Maid of the Mist for New York-bred, 2-year-old fillies by a half-length Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the third in four starts for Beautiful America, a daughter of Dixie Brass, whose only loss came at Finger Lakes. It was impressive in that she carried top weight of 121 pounds and broke from the far outside in post 10 while going a mile for the first time.

"She ran a great race today," said winning trainer Ramon "Mike" Hernandez. "That was a very good race she ran spotting everybody seven pounds."

Beautiful America, who returned $7.60 to win, covered the mile in 1:37 3/5.

"She did everything wrong today," Santos said. "She acted up in the post parade and was acting like she was pretty mad when we got in the gate. I was a little concerned. She broke a little slow, but we made up a good amount of ground on the backstretch. I knew I had a lot of horse. She gave me what she had and was very game. She's a nice filly."

Combanchera, making her first start on Lasix, ran second in her second start. It was five lengths back to Shesasmokin in third.
