Keeneland Drops Fall Curtain With Five in Fayette

Keeneland's closing-day feature, the $150,000-added Fayette Stakes (gr. III), brings out a tight-knit field of five, ready to run 1 1/8 mile on the main track.

Joseph V. Vitello's speedy Tenpins will probably be the post time favorite. A winner of six races in nine lifetime starts, the son of Smart Strike most recently won the Washington Park Handicap at Arlington Park. Donald Winfree, who trains Tenpins, has hired Craig Perret to ration his colt's speed. Tenpins will carry top weight of 123 pounds.

Multiple stakes winner Crafty Shaw looks to be Tenpins most formidable foe. He has shown enough speed to stay close early and that should serve him well in this spot. He captured the Turfway Park Fall Championship in his last trip to the gate. Trainer Peter Vestal has named regular rider James Lopez to wear the red, white and blue colors of owner Charles J. Cella.

Peachtree Stable's Invisible Ink is most famous for finishing second to Monarchos in the 2001 Kentucky Derby. He has not yet returned to his 3-year-old form but trainer Todd Pletcher hopes to have him ready to roll on Saturday. Jon Court will ride the son of Thunder Gulch for the first time in the Fayette.

Trainer Neil Howard has entered Farish, Elkins and Webber's Rock Slide. A quick son of A.P. Indy, the 4-year-old was runner-up to Crafty Shaw at Turfway Park in his latest race. He has been in the money in a dozen of 14 trips to the post. Willie Martinez who has ridden him with success in the past, has the mount.

George E. Maier's X Country ships in from Mountaineer Park where he just won the Fall Handicap. The son of Muhtafel always gives a good account of himself, and has the closing style that could be effective if a speed duel develops early. Trainer Jack Fuchs has given the call to jockey Jeff Johnston.
