Sovereign Contender Santerra in Ontario Lassie

Even though the ballots were due Friday for this year's Sovereign Awards, jockey Todd Kabel is guaranteed to have his game face on when he's aboard Santerra in Sunday's $160,200 Ontario Lassie Stakes at 1 1/16 mile at Woodbine.

Kabel, currently second in the jockey standings, will no doubt receive his fair share of votes in the Sovereign Award (handed out Dec. 7) top rider category. The same can also be said of Santerra, the bay seeking her third added-money victory on the campaign, making her a strong contender in the 2-year-old filly division.

The Ontario-bred, who won the Muskoka Stakes on Sept. 2, has reeled off four-straight top-three efforts, including a 3 ½-length score in the South Ocean Stakes on Oct. 30. The daughter of Tejabo, trained by Mike Mattine for owner Ted Burnett, has contested five consecutive stakes races.

Santerra will face two rivals from that last race, Fancy Drinks and Deputy Cures Blues. The latter closed willingly to be runner-up in the South Ocean.
