Pivotal Filly Tops Tattersalls Second Session

As on day one, Pivotal provided the top lot at Thursday's second session of the Tattersalls December Foal Sales in Newmarket, England when when a filly sired by the Cheveley Park Stud stallion was sold for 75,000 guineas.

Veteran breeder Leslie Caley's Tibthorpe Stud in East Yorkshire sold the foal to Chris Richardson, Cheveley Park Stud's manager with Gerard Burke of Glidawn Stud, a well-known filly pinhooker, the underbidder.

"She was bought to race and we always like to support the breeders who have used our stallions when they have the right individuals. It is all part of our service," said Richardson.

The filly's dam Heckle, a winner in Germany by In The Wings, was bought carrying the Pivotal filly for just 16,000 guineas at last year's December Sale by Tibthorpe Stud, managed by Caley's daughter, Lady Nelson.

Warwickshire-based agent Aiden Murphy paid 70,000 guineas for the first foal by Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Sinndar to appear in a British auction ring when purchasing a colt out of a half-sister to three-time group I winner Crimplene (Lion Cavern).

Gerry O'Sullivan, who has set up selling from Irish farm Cooneen Stud after several years with legendary pinhhoker Gay O'Callaghan, consigned the colt who was bought 'in utero' for 130,000 guineas at last year's December Sales.

Theobalds Stud, owned by singer George Michael's father Jack Panos, received 72,000 guineas for a foal from the first crop of Dalham Hall Stud stallion Diktat when Liam Cashman, owner of Rathbarry Stud in Fermoy, Ireland, secured a colt out of the Gulch mare Apennina.

"He is for re-sale, probably back here at the October," said Cashman. "He was a very nice horse - a grand sharp fellow with great presence, a great walk and a very nice pedigree."

With nine lots making 50,000 guineas or more -- compared with only two on the corresponding day in 2001 -- the figures showed a big advance on last year with the gross, average and median all second day records.

The sale continues today, beginning at 9.30am.
