Tenpins Named Michigan Horse of the Year

Tenpins, the Don Winfree-trained son of Smart Strike, was named 2002 Horse of the Year by the Michigan Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders. Bred and owned by Joseph Vitello, Tenpins won three graded stakes in 2002: the William Donald Schaefer Handicap (gr. III) at Pimlico on May 19; the Washington Park Handicap (gr. II) at Arlington Park Sept. 29; and the Fayette Handicap (gr. III) at Keeneland on Oct. 26.

Out of the Deputy Minister mare Maid's Broom, Tenpins shared the top older horse award with A.A.C. Stables Secret Romeo. Trained by Gerald Bennett, Secret Romeo was bred by James and Laura Jackson. Secret Romeo won seven stakes in 2002.
