Maiden Julie's Prize Takes Hawthorne Debutante

Richard Otto Stables' maiden Julie's Prize made a five-wide move into the stretch and surged to a four-length victory over Invader in Saturday's $100,000 Illinois Breeders Debutante at Hawthorne.

Ridden by Larry Sterling Jr. and trained by Anthony Mitchell the 2-year-old Illinois-bred filly by El Prado raced in mid-pack down the backstretch through fractions of :24.59, :49.23 and 1:15.17.

Julie's Prize won in 1:49.66 on a track rated fast. Invader, who also rallied from the outside to get second, was 1/2-length ahead of Cashmere Miss. She's Fantastic, part of a lukewarm 3-1 favored entry in the 12-horse field, faded to fifth after vying for the lead into the stretch.

The victory was worth $66,930 for Julie's Prize, who won for the first time in seven career starts, all coming this year. With two seconds and three thirds to her credit, she now has career earnings of $102,052.

Sent off at 7-2, Julie's Prize paid $9, $4.40 and $3.40. Invader returned $7 and $4.80. Cashmere Miss paid $4.40 to show.
