Roy's Trigger Pulls Upset in Illinois Futurity

Roy's Trigger won Saturday's $109,775 Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity for 2-year-old Illinois-bred colts and geldings at Hawthorne.

Facing winners for the first time in his six-race career, 18-1 shot Roy's Trigger, ridden by Christopher Emigh, triggered a $2 trifecta payoff of $5,77.60. The winning time for the 1 1/16-mile juvenile test on a fast track was 1:47.15.

R N R Breeders II own the Roy homebred, who is out of the Bates Motel mare Motel Lady. Gene Cilio trained Roy's Trigger, who defeated state-bred maidens in his previous start, which came Nov. 29 at Hawthorne. Prior to that he recorded one second in four starts. The $65,865 winner's slice increased his earnings to $87,655.

Roy's Trigger paid $38, $12.60 and $7.80. He's Hammered was second and returned $5.20 and $4.20. Fax Dance paid $22.80 to show. The $2 exacta was $180.60.
