Krone, Sahadi Make History With Spinelessjellyfish

Spinelessjellyfish made trainer Jenine Sahadi and jockey Julie Krone the first female team to win a Santa Anita stakes Sunday in the $108,300 Sensational Star Handicap for older California-breds.

Spinelessjellyfish won the 6 1/2-furlong turf event by a neck in stakes record time of 1:11.84.

"He's a very funny horse to ride," Sahadi said of the 7-year-old son of 1986 Breeders' Cup Classic champion Skywalker. "Julie did a great job. The horse settled real nice for her. He wasn't rank and silly."

Saving ground off the pace, Spinelessjellyfish was in crowd at the top of the stretch but maneuvered between horses to get the lead past midstretch, holding off Macward by a neck at the wire in spite of bearing out slightly. Macward was a length in front of Turkish Prize.

Spinelessjellyfish was the 5-2 favorite in the field of seven despite not having won in 16 months. He was winless in 11 races in 2002. His last win was Sept. 3, 2001, when he finished in a dead heat for first with Native Desert in the California Turf Championship Handicap at Bay Meadows.

However, four of Spinelessjellyfish's 10 career victories have come on the Santa Anita downhill turf course. He earned $64,890 for his owner and breeder Cardiff Stud, improving his career earnings to $807,533.

Spinelessjellyfish paid $7.40, $4.40 and $2.80. Macward returned $5.60 and $3.20. Turkish Prize paid $2.80.
