A well-matched field of nine fillies and mares will meet on the turf Saturday in the $100,000 Brown Bess Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Golden Gate Fields. The Brown Bess lineup includes three horses trained by Hall of Famers – Crazy Ensign (conditioned by Richard Mandella), Double Cat (Neil Drysdale), and L'Emeraude (Bobby Frankel).The Brown Bess will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the Lakeside Turf Course. Crazy Ensign is the starting high weight at 118 pounds. Double Cat and L'Emeraude will both tote 117 pounds. Crazy Ensign captured the Miss America Handicap on the turf at Bay Meadows last year but is winless in eight subsequent starts. However, the 7-year-old mare came within a nose of winning the Hillsborough Handicap at Bay Meadows in September and she enters the Brown Bess off a fourth-place finish in the San Gorgonio Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita on Jan. 11.Owned by El Faruk Stable, Crazy Ensign has won six of her 24 career starts and $340,774.Double Cat ran third in the San Gorgonio, defeating Crazy Ensign by 1 1/2 lengths. A Kentucky-bred mare by Storm Cat, Double Cat has won four of her nine career races, including the Queen Of The Green Handicap at Turf Paradise on Nov. 23. Double Cat races for her breeders, Marjorie and Irving Cowan. L'Emeraude, owned by Amerman Racing Stables, has won four of her 17 career starts. The French-bred mare will making her first start since Nov. 20, when she finished second in a 1 1/16-miles allowance race on the grass at Hollywood Park.
Bush Triumph had a fine 2002 campaign, recording five wins and two seconds in seven races. The five wins came consecutively, starting in a $25,000 maiden-claiming event and culminating in an $80,000 allowance/optional claiming race.
