Mystic Lady, an eight-time stakes winner in her career, will be making her final start when she runs in Saturday's $100,000 Sabin Handicap at Gulfstream Park. The fillies and mares stakes will be contested at 1 1/16 miles.
"The Sabin will be her last start," trainer Mark Hennig said. "After the Sabin it will be off to the breeding shed for her." Mystic Lady (Thunder Gulch -- Diane Suzanne, by Complaince) has won two stakes at Gulfstream Park. She won the Heecomesthebride Stakes (gr. III) in 2001 and the Banshee Breeze Handicap in 2002. She also won the Cotillion Handicap (gr. II) at Philadelphia Park and the Fantasy Stakes (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park as well as scores in three graded stakes races.
"She's been a nice filly," Hennig said. "She doesn't have to carry her track with her as her record attests. She's won on both dirt and turf."
Mystic Lady hasn't won since her Banshee Breeze victory but
she was second in the Turnback the Alarm Handicap (gr. III) at Aqueduct on Nov. 3 and was second in the Great States Challenge Distaff at Sam Houston Park on Dec. 7. In her last outing, she set the early pace then tired to finish sixth in an allowance race at Gulfstream on Jan. 20.
"There was too much speed in there in her last race," Hennig said. "Hopefully, there won't be as much speed in the Sabin."
With 10 wins in 26 starts, the 11-year-old mare has earned $1,167,390. She is owned by Lee Lewis.
