Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey's Ten Cents A Shine worked Monday morning in preparation for Saturday's $200,000, grade I Fountain of Youth Stakes for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park in Florida. With jockey Jerry Bailey in the irons, Ten Cents A Shine was clocked :59 2/5 handily for five furlongs, the best time of 42 horses working that distance. "Ken (trainer Ken McPeek) is in Brazil and won't be back until Wednesday," assistant trainer Helen Pitts said. "He's down there seeing a horse run that he will probably be bringing back to this country. I talked with him after the workout and he said that if the horse came out of the workout in good shape then he would definitely be running on Saturday and Jerry (Bailey) would be riding him. The horse cooled out very well so I guess he'll be running on Saturday."Ten Cents A Shine won at first asking in his maiden start at Churchill Downs on Nov. 2. Ten Cents A Shine rallied from 20 lengths back to get the lead in the stretch then weakened late and was second, beaten a length, in the 1 1/16 miles test.In his seasonal debut at Gulfstream on Jan. 31, Ten Cents A Shine rallied from eighth place to finish on even terms with the undefeated Senor Swinger in the 1 1/16 miles allowance test. Also working toward the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream was Allen Jerkens-trained Spite The Devil, who went an easy seven furlongs in 1:30 2/5 breezing.
