Washington Champions Announced

Sabertooth, winner of the 67th running of Longacres Mile (gr. III), was named 2002 Washington-bred horse of the year Saturday.

In addition to winning the Longacres Mile during the 2002 Emerald Downs meeting, the Jim Penney-trained Sabertooth also won last year's Washington Cup Classic at the Auburn racetrack. The 4-year-old Sabertooth was also named top handicap horse.

Slewsbox repeated as sprinter of the year. Slewsbox, who won the grade III Desert Storm Handicap at Hollywood Park, also received honors as top older filly or mare.

Emerald Downs stakes winners Bold Ranger, Bub and Colterkind were also honored as 2002 Washington-bred champions. Bold Ranger was named top 3-year-old colt or gelding. Bub earned top juvenile honors. Colterkind was selected as most improved plater.

The complete list of Wahsington-bred champions include: horse of the year, Sabertooth; top older filly or mare, Slewsbox; top 3-year-old male, Bold Ranger; top 3-year-old filly, No Turbulence; top 2-year-old male, Bub; top 2-year-old filly, Youcan'ttakeme; top handicap horse, Sabertooth; top sprinter, Slewsbox; plater of the year, Sempai; and most improved plater, Colterkind.
