Kafwain Moves to Front in Derby Future Bet

The field remained the solid favorite at 6-5 over each of the 23 named betting interests at the conclusion of the second day of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager's opening pool Friday.

The odds on Kafwain, who romped to victory in the seven-furlong San Vicente (gr. II) Feb. 1, dropped from 12-1 Thursday to 10-1 on Friday. The Thoroughbred Corp.-owned son of Cherokee Run, trained by Bob Baffert, is the leading contender among the named candidates for the May 3 Derby.

A total of $103,961 had been recorded on the future bet as of 10 p.m. EST. The first of three wagering pools preceding the Derby, the current action continues until Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EST.

At 14-1 is Sky Mesa, unchanged from the opening day, and Indy Dancer, who was co-favored at 12-1 on Thursday. Indy Dancer goes in Sunday's Risen Star (gr. III) for owner Wertheimer Farm and trainer Todd Plecher at Fair Grounds. Sky Mesa's next start, which would be his first since injuring an ankle prior to last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) is undecided, although the undefeated son of Pulpit has been working for owner John Oxley and trainer John Ward Jr.

Empire Maker, second by a length to Man Among Men (30-1) in the 1 1/8-mile Sham Feb. 7, is currently 15-1. The rest of the field is at 21-1 or higher.
