Leading trainer Gai Waterhouse set a Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale record when she paid 250,000 Australian dollars (approximately $147,485 in U.S. funds) for a colt by Danehill at the opening session on Wednesday. The bay colt out of the Sir Tristram mare Cherry Garden is a half-brother to Adelaide Guineas winner Liberty Rose. Waterhouse purchased the colt for Victorian owner Robert Scanlon, her successful bid beating the previous Adelaide sale record of 230,000 Australian dollars.
Other standout lots were a colt by Strategic from True Blue Spirit sold to Aquanita Racing of Victoria for 105,000 Australian dollars ($61,944) and a colt by Bianconi from Tudor Primrose purchased by John Chalmers Bloodstock for 142,500 Australian dollars ($84,066).
A total of 75 lots were sold at the opening session for a gross of 2,778,500 Australian dollars ($1,639,148) and an average price of 37,047 Australian dollars ($21,856).
