Captain Red Sets Inner Track Record at Big A

Captain Red won the $54,000 allowance feature at Aqueduct on Wednesday in a record six-furlong time of 1:07 4/5 for the inner track, breaking the previous mark by 3/5 of a second.

The 6-year-old son of Mr. Greeley bettered the previous mark of 1:08 2/5 set by Whirling Blade on March 5, 1997.

"It was a big race from him," said trainer Dimitrios Synnefias. "He's been very good to us. I think now this is the best he's ever been."

Captain Red finished a half-length ahead of Gold I.D. Affirmed Success was another half-length back in third.

Rich Schosberg, the trainer of Affirmed Success, filed a foul claim against Captain Red but it was not allowed. Affirmed Success, the 9-year-old gelding with winnings of more than $2.2 million, was third in the stretch and gaining on the inside under jockey Richard Migliore. But Migliore checked rather than continuing on the rail and tried to bring the heavy favorite in the field of six around the outside of Captain Red and jockey John McKee.

It was Captain Red's third win in his last four starts. Captain Red, who carried 111 pounds, was coupled in the wagering with Esteemed Friend. Captain Red won for the 13th time in 40 career starts while increasing his career earnings to $347,250.

Nine-year-old Say Florida Sandy, the richest New York bred of all time with more than $2 million in earnings, finished out of the money.

The winning entry returned $7.60, $4.70 and $2.10. Gold I.D. paid $7.60 and $2.10 and Affirmed Success was $2.10.
