Rain Won't Keep Man Among Men Out of San Felipe

(from track report)
There may be rain in the forecast, but Man Among Men will run in Sunday's $250,000 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita, weather or not.

So says the colt's 31-year-old trainer, Gary Mandella.

"The weather won't effect his participation, because if he skips this, then where do you run?" Mandella said. "You set yourself back two weeks and you cost yourself a chance to run back again, and I actually don't think an off track would compromise his race (in the San Felipe). I think he'd run well over that kind of track, but I'm guessing the same way we all guess.

"I'd be really disappointed, though, because now I'd have to worry so much more about his condition the day after the race, especially if it comes up a really sloppy track, because you never know how a horse will recover. I'm not criticizing this track, because conditions would be similar on any off track he'd run on."

Ron Ellis, trainer of Atswhatimtalknbout, had much the same perspective. "Ats" is scheduled to make his stakes debut Sunday.

"We'll see," the trainer said. "There are a lot of variations to 'off' tracks."

Trainer Jeff Mullins plans to run Baldwin Stakes (gr. IIIT) winner Buddy Gil, rain or shine.

"He's doing excellent," the trainer said of the Kentucky-bred gelding. "He ran a couple bad races up there (Golden Gate) in the mud, but that was a different race track and he's a different horse. He ran a 106 Beyer last time and he was never even close to that before."

Asked about going from turf to dirt, Mullins said: "If you don't ever give them the chance, you never know."

Logician worked three furlongs on Hollywood Park's fast main track Thursday morning in a bullet :35.40, but trainer Craig Dollase was still shopping for a rider.

"I don't know what the weather will be like, but right now, we're looking forward to running," Dollase said. "He worked very well."
